Keeping Kitty Cool

We probably don’t have to tell you that summertime here in Florida can be pretty brutal. Heat can be very tough on kitties too! Overheating is actually very dangerous for our feline friends. Cats don’t have any easy ways to cool down: panting isn’t very effective for them, and they can’t sweat like we do. Here, a Jacksonville Beach, FL vet discusses keeping your furball cool when the temperatures rise.

Your cat should always has plenty of fresh, clean water. Some kitties prefer to drink running water. If you’ve ever caught Fluffy drinking from the sink, even though her bowl is full, consider getting her a pet fountain.

Brushing Fluffy regularly will remove dead fur and dander from her coat. This will also help keep her cooler in warm weather.

Ice Cube

Did you know that cats can only sweat through their paw pads? Give Fluffy an ice cube to smack around. This will both entertain your furball, and help her cool off. It will also satisfy her natural urge to occasionally bat things around.

Free Access

If you let Fluffy have free rein of your home, she’ll automatically find the coolest area. Our furry little pals are absolute experts at finding comfortable spots to relax and look unimpressed in! (Note: you may find Fluffy sprawled out in your tub or on the bathroom floor. This is because tile naturally stays cool.)

Furball Hammock

Raised beds allow air to pass beneath them, and can help keep your furry friend cool. You can buy Fluffy an elevated bed, but you can also make a hammock for her in just a few minutes. All you will need is a piece of sturdy material, such as denim, and a four-legged end table or coffee table. Measure the fabric so that it is just a bit smaller than the tabletop, and attach it to the legs. Then, just tell Fluffy not to use it!

Climate Control

The simplest way to help Fluffy beat the heat? Keep her inside, in rooms cooled by fans or air conditioners. Actually, we recommend that kitties always live indoors. Cats are simply safer inside, where they are protected not only from extreme temperatures, but from cars, predators, and other hazards as well.
