Pets and Allergies

Did you know that May is officially Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month? Many people are allergic to our furry friends. Of course, Fido and Fluffy can also have allergies themselves! Read on as a local Jacksonville Beach, FL vet discusses allergies in pets.

Having Pets With Allergies

Do you have allergies? Don’t assume this means you can’t have pets. While no dog or cat breeds are completely hypoallergenic, some cause more reactions than others do. Do plenty of research, and spend some time with your new furry friend before deciding. Vacuuming and dusting regularly will also help. A good air purifier will remove dust, fur, and dander from your home. Most people react to these things, rather than to pets themselves, so this can be very helpful.

Kids and Pets

Did you know that having pets can actually reduce a child’s chances of developing allergies? As it turns out, being exposed to Fluffy and Fido can help youngsters build a resistance to pet fur and dander.

Pets That Have Allergies

Fido and Fluffy can also develop allergies. Just like people, pets often react to dust, mold, trees and plants, leaves, or pollen. Your four-legged pal can also be allergic to specific materials, certain foods, or even to ingredients in their shampoo. Some common signs of allergies in pets include red or watery eyes; sneezing; snoring; burping; wheezing; flatulence; vomiting; diarrhea; skin problems; and/or ear infections. If you think your pet may have allergies, contact your vet right away. Your furry companion will likely need tests, to determine what he or she is reacting to. Once your vet has identified the culprit, you can move on to discussing treatment options, which will vary on a case-by-case basis.

Are you having guests that have allergies? There are some things you can do to make their stay more comfortable. If possible, opt for floors in the guest room, rather than carpet, and blinds instead of curtains. Getting a good air purifier and hypoallergenic bedding for that room can also help. Another thing you can do is set out tissues and over-the-counter allergy meds. We also recommend brushing your pet daily for about a week or so before your company arrives.
