Responsible Dog Ownership

September is Responsible Dog Ownership Month! While many people love to pamper their pets with belly rubs and bacon, taking good care of Fido does require a bit more than that. Read on as a Jacksonville Beach, FL vet discusses responsible dog ownership.

Veterinary Care

We recommend that our furry pals come in at least once a year, for vaccinations, parasite control, and exams. You’ll also want to make sure that Fido has been microchipped and spayed or neutered. At home, keep a close eye on your pup, and contact your vet immediately if you notice any signs of illness.

Doggy Diet

Fido certainly has mastered that adorable sad look that is so effective at getting us to fork over yummy snacks. In fact, dogs’ begging skills are a big part of the reason so many of our canine patients are obese! Offer your pup nutritional, healthy food, but don’t go overboard with fattening treats.

Toys and Playtime

Toys aren’t just fun for dogs: they’re great for them! Playing keeps Fido active and occupied, helps him burn off excess energy, and offers him beneficial mental stimulation. Give your canine friend lots of toys to play with!

Exercise

Exercise is just as important for dogs as it is for people! Make sure Fido gets the right amount and type of exercise. Some pups need lots of activity and vigorous play, while others need only daily walks.

Training

Training is very important, both for petiquette and safety. Make sure that Fido knows and obeys basic doggy obedience commands, like Sit, Stay, Heel, Come, and Lay Down.

Safety

Never underestimate Fido’s ability to get himself into mischief! Make your home and yard safe for your canine pal by removing or securing dangerous objects, such as toxic plants; chemicals; medications; plastic bags and wrappers; and anything small or sharp. Also, be sure to keep your pooch leashed whenever you take him off your property.

Grooming

All dogs have their own specific needs for grooming. Some pups need daily brushings, while others only need occasional baths. Make sure to keep your furry buddy looking clean and adorable! It’s also important to keep up with Fido’s pawdicures and dental care. Ask your vet for specific advice.
