DIY Kitty Furniture

Does your cat have some furniture of her own? If so, that’s great! While Fluffy can definitely manage to get comfortable on our sofas, beds, and chairs, she will certainly love having a few things she doesn’t have to share. You don’t have to blow your whole paycheck on kitty furniture, however. Here, a Jacksonville Beach, FL vet offers some great ideas for cat furniture you can make yourself.

Cat Tower

You can turn an old stepladder, bookshelf, or storage rack to a kitty tower in just a few minutes. Add smooth planks to the steps or shelves to widen them out, and then cover it in carpet scraps or sisal rope.

Kitty Beds

Cats like to have a variety of comfy spots to choose from for their daily napping routines. A hard-shell suitcase or hatbox will make a great kitty bed. You can also turn an old end table with doors into a cute pet bed. Remove or brace the doors, so Fluffy can’t get stuck inside. Add soft pillows or blankets, and use paint, stencils, or contact paper to make it look nice. Then, just tell your pet not to use it. Your kitty will hop right in!

Pet Tent

Kitties often feel comfortable in small, enclosed spaces. You can make Fluffy a pet tent out of an old tee shirt and a wire hangar. This is a great option for cats that are shy or nervous! Look online for step-by-step instructions.

Raised beds are a great option for summer! Because they allow air to move beneath them, they stay cooler than regular beds. All you need to make Fluffy a hammock is an end table or coffee table with four legs and a piece of sturdy material. Cut the fabric so that it’s a bit smaller than the tabletop, and then attach the corners to the chair legs. Voila!

Window Seat

Did you know that birdwatching is one of Fluffy’s favorite activities? Make your kitty a comfy window seat by adding a wide, smooth planks to a windowsill. You can also add a pet bed: just use Velcro to attach it to the board. To make this even more fun for your furball, put a birdfeeder in your yard, where she can see it.
